Overview :

The Maximal Voluntary Ventilation, or MVV(F), is the maximal volume expelled in 12 seconds of forced breathing. It is also called the maximal breathing capacity (MBC).

MVV at 40 RPM in liters/minute in males 20 - 65 years of age (Birath et al, 1963) =

= (-1.288* (age in years)) + 180.5

MVV at 40 RPM in liters/minute in females 20-65 years of age (Birath et al, 1963) =

= (-0.618 * (age in years)) + 113.1

MVV in liters/min for adult males (Boren, 1966) =

= (3.39 * (height in inches)) - (1.26 * (age in years)) - 21.4

MBC in liters/min for adult males (Cherniack, 1972) =

= (3.029 * (height in inches)) - (0.816 * (age in years)) - 37.949

MBC in liters/min for adult females (Cherniack, 1972) =

= (2.138 * (height in inches)) - (0.685 * (age in years)) - 4.87

MBC in liters/minute in adult males (Goldman, 1959) =

= (-1.873 * (age in years)) + (78.2 * (body surface area in square meters)) + 72.7

MBC in liters/minute in adult females (Goldman, 1959) =

= (-0.965 * (age in years)) + (67.18 * (body surface area in square meters)) + 26.3

MVV in liters/minute in adult males 20 - 65 years of age (Grimby, 1963) =

= (79 * (height in meters)) - (1.42* (age in years)) + 76

MVV in liters/minute in adult females 18 - 72 (Grimby, 1963) =

= (-0.77 * (age in years)) + 138
