Overview :

There are several ways to determine a fair price to charge for a prescription.

dispensing fee paid by the patient =

= (cost of ingredients, supplies and equipment) + (pharmacy charge)

Type of Pharmacy Charge

Pharmacy Charge

percent markup

((percent) / 100) * (costs)

percent markup plus minimum professional fee

((percent) / 100) * (costs) + (minimum fee)

flat professional fee

(fee per prescription)

professional fee based on time spent

(time spent in hours) * (hourly rate)

where:

• The markup fee is intended to cover operational costs for running the pharmacy (electricity, heating, staff, taxes, etc.).

• Managed care organizations tend to squeeze the margins in small operations where there are fewer people to distribute the costs over.
