Overview :
Chromosome analysis may be performed in both partners seeking
assisted fertilization if certain indications are present. This usually involves
karyotyping although other techniques may be used when warranted.
Indications for chromosome analysis of partners seeking
assisted fertilization:
(1)
repeated miscarriage in the patients or among relatives
(2)
previous stillbirth, especially when malformations are present or the cause of
fetal death is unclear
(3) history
of malformations or other congenital disorders in the patients or their
relatives
(4) other
couples in the family with infertility
(5) planned
micro-assisted fertilization
Notes:
• Be sure
to inquire about previous marriages or relationships.
• Some of
the techniques of micro-assisted fertilization are recent, and the risk for
increased malformations or congenital anomalies may be more theoretical than
real.
