Overview :
Tanaka et al developed formulas for predicting maximal heart
rate in healthy adults during exercise. These were derived to provide more
accurate predictions than previous equations. The authors are from the
University of Colorado in Boulder and the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center in Denver.
Problem with the usual formula for calculating maximal heart
rate (see above) is that it tends to underestimate maximal heart rate in older
adults. Exercise prescription using this formula results in less than intended
exercise intensity.
