Overview :
Mottola et al developed equations for determining the target
heart rate during exercise for a pregnant woman. The authors are from the
University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.
Patient selection: pregnant woman from 16 to 22 weeks
gestation
The target heart rate is that associated with 60-80% of
aerobic capacity.
Parameters:
(1) peak oxygen consumption in mL per kg per minute
(2) age
(3) fitness level

• The
equation for predicting peak oxygen consumption in a pregnant woman is in
36.03.13.
According to the PARmed-X for Pregnancy document the target
heart rate for a low risk pregnant woman 20-29 years of age should be 135-150
beats per minute.
