Overview :

Mottola et al developed equations for determining the target heart rate during exercise for a pregnant woman. The authors are from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.

Patient selection: pregnant woman from 16 to 22 weeks gestation

The target heart rate is that associated with 60-80% of aerobic capacity.

Parameters:

(1) peak oxygen consumption in mL per kg per minute

(2) age

(3) fitness level

Age

Fitness Level

Target Heart Rate in beats/minute

20 - 29

unfit

(3.933 * (VO2)) + 86.088

active

(4.146 * (VO2)) + 73.152

(2.372 * (VO2)) + 100.169

30 - 39

(4.452 * (VO2)) + 79.310

(4.078 * (VO2)) + 74.428

(2.557 * (VO2)) + 93.194

where:

• The equation for predicting peak oxygen consumption in a pregnant woman is in 36.03.13.

According to the PARmed-X for Pregnancy document the target heart rate for a low risk pregnant woman 20-29 years of age should be 135-150 beats per minute.
