Overview :
Harirchi et al
identified risk factors for frostbite in mountaineers. These can help identify a
person who may be at risk for frostbite so that preventive measures can be
taken. The authors are from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences in
Iran.
The risk of
frostbite is greatest in the hands and feet.
Weather-related
risk factors:
(1) severe cold
weather (risk greater in the winter)
(2) prolonged
exposure in cold weather
(3) severe
wind
(4) wet
clothing
Skill-related
risk factors:
(1)
inappropriate clothing
(2) lack of
proper equipment
(3) incorrect
use of equipment
(4) lack of
knowledge on dealing with severe cold weather
(5)
inexperienced guide
(6) unnecessary
contact with snow
(7) remaining in
the same position for a long period of time
The risk is less
if the mountaineer is experienced and well-trained, with proper
equipment.
