Overview :

Almogy et al identified injuries at the site of a bomb explosion that can help identify a person at high risk for blast lung injury (BLI). A patient with blast lung injury may rapidly deteriorate unless specialized care is given. The authors are from Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and Carmel Hospital in Haifa, Israel.

Injuries indicative of a high risk of blast lung injury:

(1) skull fracture

(2) penetrating wounds to the head or torso

(3) burns covering more than 10% of the body surface area

A patient one or more of these findings should be triaged to a level I trauma center.
