Overview :

Mishra et al developed the Malaria Prognosis Score (MPS) for predicting mortality in an adult with severe falciparum malaria. This can help identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Ispat General Hospital (India), Sushilavati Government Women's College (India) and the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

Patient selection: adult with falciparum malaria

Parameters:

(1) severe anemia

(2) acute renal failure

(3) acute respiratory distress (ARDS)

(4) cerebral malaria (with unrousable coma)

= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 10

• The higher the score the greater the risk of mortality.
