  Risk Factors for Nontyphoid Salmonella Bacteremia in Pediatric Patients

Overview :

A pediatric patient may be at increased risk for bacteremia from a nontyphoid Salmonella if conditions are present.

 

Risk factors for nontyphoid Salmonella bacteremia in a pediatric patient:

(1) age <= 3 months

(2) AIDS

(3) presence of a malignancy

(4) immunodeficiency or immunosuppressive therapy

(5) hemolytic anemia

(6) inflammatory bowel disease

 

A child with bacteremia due to a nontyphoid Salmonella species is at increased risk for extraintestinal infections.
