Overview :

Specific preoperative characteristics are independent predictors of patient outcome after cataract surgery.

Outcome measures used 4 months following cataract surgery:

(1) Snellen visual acuity

(2) cataract symptom score

(3) VP-14 score

Preoperative Characteristics

Odds Ratio of Not Improving on >=1 Outcome Measure Following Surgery

age >= 75 years of age

3.57

VF-14 score >= 90

2.10

cataract symptom score <= 3

3.29

ocular comorbidity present (glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration)

2.16

Interpretation

• The mean adjusted rate of failure to improve on none of the outcome measures 4 months after surgery was 8.8-13.8% in patients without any of the predictors.

• The mean adjusted rate of failure to improve on none of the outcome measures 4 months after surgery was 20.5-26.5% in patients with one or more of the preoperative characteristics.
