  Risk Factors for Liver Hematoma During Pregnancy

Overview :

A subcapsular hematoma may develop in a pregnant woman. Rupture can result in massive intra-abdominal hemorrhage with significant maternal and fetal mortality.

 

Most cases occur in the third trimester or shortly after delivery.

 

Risk factors for liver hematoma:

(1) multiparity

(2) history of liver hematoma in a previous pregnancy

 

Conditions associated with liver hematoma:

(1) HELLP syndrome

(2) other forms of eclampsia/preeclampsia

(3) a history of current cocaine abuse

(4) recent trauma to the abdomen

(5) subcapsular hemangioma

(6) hepatic neoplasm

(7) hepatic abscess

(8) acute fatty liver of pregnancy

 

where:

• Other drugs such as methamphetamine might also be a risk factor.
