Overview :
Measurement of creatinine clearance can be used to estimate
the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in a patient with chronic renal disease.
Testing should be done periodically to monitor renal function and to detect any
deterioration over time.
Creatinine clearance can be measured once a year in a person
with stable renal function.
It can be measured more often if the patient has:
(1) GFR
< 60 mL per minute per 1.73 aquare meters body surface area
(2) a
decline in GFR >= 4 mL per min per 1.73 square meter BSA per year (which is
considered a rapid decline)
(3)
deterioration/progression in the disease causing the chronic renal
dysfunction
(4)
exposure to risk factors for an acute decline in GFR (urinary tract obstruction,
volume deplation, exposure to nephrotoxic drugs)
(5) ongoing
therapy to slow progression in the decline of renal function.
