Overview :
Transketolase can be used as a functional test for thiamine.
Specimen: Whole blood is collected with heparin as
anticoagulant. An erythrocyte hemolysate is prepared, which is stable for at
least 4 weeks if frozen.
Analysis:
• NADH dependent Erythrocyte Transketolase, measured at 340
nm at 37 C.
• If anemia is
present, erythrocyte transketolase activity should be expressed per unit
hemoglobin.
Interpretation:
• normal is 0.75-1.30 IU transketolase per gram hemoglobin
